“Rebuilding Local & Community Media for the 21st Century”
CCCR hosted a Local Democracy and News conference on Oct. 10th, 2024, featuring research and agenda-building focused on the future of the field with CCCR affiliates from UW-Madison and top scholars from around the United States and Canada.
Day 1 featured research by our exemplary invited guests:
Dr. Johanna Dunaway (Syracuse University) presented “News Access and Political Accountability.”
Dr. Benjamin Toff (University of Minnesota) presented “Breaking Down the ‘Who’ in Journalism: An Integrated Approach to Assessing the Health of Local News Ecosystems.”
Dr. Yingdan Lu (Northwestern University) presented “From Pixels to Politics: Computational Visual Analysis in Political Communication.”
Dr. Aengus Bridgman (McGill University) presented “When Journalism is Turned Off: Evaluating the Consequences of the Meta News Ban in Canada.”
On Day 2, UW-Madison CCCR affiliates shared their research, methods, and recommendations, including Prof. Mike Wagner, Prof. Dhavan Shah, Dr. Nathan Kalmoe, and PhD students Mengyu Lee, Sean Pauley, and Yoo Ji Suh.
At the conclusion of the event, Prof. Mike Wagner and Prof. Emeritus Lew Friedland spoke on a panel with PBS Wisconsin’s Frederica Fryberg entitled “Rebuilding Local & Community Media for the 21st Century,” partnering with the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and led by CCCR co-Investigator, Kathy Cramer, who authored this report on the subject.
